Portrait
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Rodrigues is considered one of the most important designers of modern Brazilian furniture. Inspired and influenced by the leading modernist architects including Niemeyer or Lucia Costa, Rodrigues founded his studio, OCA in 1955 with a simple mission: to create contemporary furniture in line with Bauhaus principals but within a Brazilian context. Instead of metal for example, Rodrigues preferred wood, a rich and beautiful resource found in the tropical jungles of the country. Rather than hard lines, he preferred to address the comfort and needs of his countrymen. In 1961, the Mole, one first place in the international furniture competition in Cantu, before then becoming a part of the permenant collection at MoMA, NY.
